Changes are Coming January 1st
New federal regulations will be taking effect for commercial walk-in coolers and freezers manufactured on or after January 1, 2009. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (H.R. 6) - or EISA - provides a single, uniform requirement for all enclosed, refrigerated storage spaces of less than 3,000 square feet. Exceptions: Walk-in manufactured exclusively for medical, scientific or research purposes.
EISA to impact evaporators, condensing units, and condensers
The new standards require evaporators under 1 horsepower and 460 volts to have electronically commutated equivalent or three-phase fan motors. Condensers and condensing units under 1 horsepower must have electronically commutated equivalent, PSC, or three-phase fan motors.
Heatcraft Refrigeration Products provides a wide range of products that comply with the new regulations:
| • | All unit coolers designed for walk-in boxes are available with the EC motor option, including all brands of our Low Profile, Medium Profile, Center Mount, Low Velocity and Glycol product lines |
| • | All condensing units are available with PSC or three-phase motors (Except 1-3 ton FCB/DVT/WSS condensers) |
| • | All condensers are available with EC or three-phase motors |
| • | All packaged refrigeration systems (PRO3TM) are available with EC motors in the evaporator section and PSC motors in the condensing unit section |
Regulations passed under California Title 20 are exempt from EISA, and businesses operating in California should comply with those standards. Also, EISA is not interpreted to impact walk-in coolers and freezers currently in operation.
